Tender Loving Care – 2

Tender Loving Care bannerThe last part of this -in between- story.

*****

During his absence, the twins Chessie and Marvin had grown. The same had happened to his baby sisters. The triplets Jenny, Jessica and Joyce had become toddlers.
They didn’t even know him. He felt a complete stranger in his own family.

After having greeted them politely they had their meal together but Mattie didn’t really feel at home and was very unhappy.
When Ilona took the time to talk to the boy, he said that he had preferred to have an older brother because everything is worse for the first born. His mother looked at him and didn
t know what to say.

He slept alone in his own bedroom and cried again when he woke up. He missed the Lightkeeper family.

The obsession of the boy didnt leave Ilona’s mind. She couldnt sleep very well and the very moment she would fall asleep, she woke up by (what she thought) was her own voice repeating the word responsibility, responsibility. She sat on the bed and started to remember. She was the youngest of her family and had two older brothers; Marvin and Jackson. They had been very fond of her and she remembered them with a warm feeling in her heart. Suddenly she knew how to handle this but, looking at the clock, she couldnt wake the boy up this time of the night but she felt better now; went back to bed and fell asleep immediately.

When Mattie came home from school she took him apart. She told him that she loved him very much and that she understood why he liked to have an older brother or sister.

Then she asked: “Do you think that your brothers and sisters are pleased to have you as an older brother?”
Mattie got a bit confused and answered: “Well, I don’t know… I suppose they don’t know me very well”.

Ilona looked at him and said: “Exactly! Perhaps this is something to think about my boy… you are not really acting as a big brother to them. Marvin and Chessie are already going to school and it wouldn’t be so bad if you would help them with their homework. That’s a good way to show your love to the whole family because, they would appreciate it and your father and I would have our hands free to teach your little sisters to walk and talk before they grow up.”

Mattie: “You don’t love me as much as when I was a toddler” and he looked very unhappy.
Ilona: “How did you come to that conclusion? I love you all very much but parents always feel something very special for their first born”.

Mattie looked at his mothers’ face and saw that she was about to shed tears. Suddenly he felt that she never had stopped loving him and he embraced her. That’s when his own tears started to run over his cheeks. Ilona caressed him if though he was a baby and he felt that he couldn’t speak at all.

Next morning, before going to school, he offered Marvin to help him and Chessie with their homework this afternoon. Marvin was surprised but accepted the offer.

He dedicated time playing with the girls as well.

From that moment on, things went much better. Now and again he spent a week-end with Raph but mostly invited Raph to come and play with him. Now he felt more responsible as the older brother.

It was really great when Chessie and Marvin came home, saying that they had improved a lot at school since Mattie helped them with their homework.

Ilona saw that the boy was doing a wonderful job and she talked about it with Chester. “Could you possibly get some days off and take Mateo on a holiday? One way or another, we never have quality time for the children but, no doubt, he is dealing with the worst part and I thought that we could reward him with something very special”.
“I suppose that there won’t be any problem because I never had a holiday so far but what about Matty? Will school give permission?”

Ilona called school and she was told that she needed an official document from the Administration, so she went to the Town Hall to obtain permission.

Early Saturday morning, Chester asked Mattie if he wanted to accompany him on a holiday to Egypt. “Are we going all of us?” “No”, his father replied “the others are too young to come with me. It will be only you and me. Now… hurry and get changed”. That was a big surprise. Mattie called his friend to tell him the big news and he promised to buy him a souvenir.

It was there that the bond between father and son became stronger. Matty had a good time in Egypt.

His father took him to explore but he wasn’t very fond of that.

He loved to play on the market place and talk to the people there. They even let him play in the fountain because it was very hot there.

They had a good time and the boy told his dad, he didn’t even miss the movies on TV. He loved to sleep with dad in the tent and was pleased when his dad bought him one to take home.

After a few days they came home again and the boy was very proud to show in school a few things he dug up with his father.
Finally he had accepted the fact that he was the older brother with all the pros and cons but he felt that he was loved by his parents.
As a matter of fact, he started to feel more important and next week it would be his birthday and he knew that by then it would be impossible to play with his same toys, so he just used his time ‘usefully’.

To be completed in the story ‘Encounters’.

Tender Loving Care – 1

This family, Hemmingway, is known to those who have read my first story I published at TSR ‘Just Another Life Story’. Now and again we’ve seen them as well in the following stories where they were not the main characters but now it’s about time to go back to them to see what happened to this beautiful family.

*****

Mattie Hemmingway had been called after his grandfather from mothers side, Mateo. He was Chester and Ilona’s oldest son.

He just had his birthday when his mother had twins. Two boys: Marvin and Chessie. His mother was very busy with the babies and her job. She had her hands full with the babies and Mattie knew it but he couldnt help feeling lonesome. He thought that she loved the little ones better.

One year after the twins birth, Ilona was pregnant again and they had to move to another house, farther away from his best friend Raphael Lightkeeper. They only lived there for about half a year because then his mother came from hospital with triplets. Three girls: Jenny, Jessica and Joyce. They had to move again to a bigger house but, fortunately in the same street where his friend lived.

His father was working at the Hospital and had very irregular work hours. Often he had to work at night and then he had to sleep during the day. His mother was always with the babies at the doctors or she was feeding them. She had quit her job because she was too busy with the children. This boy felt very lonely. Thats why he used to be unhappy and bad humored.

Just before holiday started, his mother told him that Raphs mom, Cynthia had invited him to spend holidays at Raphs house.

So, he went to stay with his friend. He had grown very fond of Raphs mother and even little Risto had his sympathy.

He liked very much to form part of that small family. It was always so peaceful and Raphs mom was so sweet: she always seemed to have time for him even though he wasnt related to her.

He even had learned to love the memory of Raphs father who died before Raph was born. He had such a good time with his friend. He didn’t remember that he ever had been so happy in his life.

When holiday was over, he asked if he could stay a while longer. It was no problem for Cynthia. Her house was big enough and she liked the boy as well. She had noticed already that he had a difficult character but she could deal with that and kind of understood him.

Mateos mother felt relieved because she had one less to take care of. She really had her hands full with the 5 babies. Of course she missed her oldest son; more than he suspected.

As a matter of fact, he didnt give her so much work because he went to school but she had so little time and when he was at home she felt always guilty that she couldnt be with him more often.

They had moved to another house with a big courtyard where the babies could play safely.
Chester did what he could to help his wife to move the furniture and to take care of the babies, but he had his limits as well.

One day he didnt come home from work. He often had to do extra hours but usually he phoned to tell her so. This time there had been no phone call and she became nervous. She phoned hospital and they told her that he had left already hours ago. She hired a babysitter and took a taxi to go to hospital. She found him halfway sitting in his car. He was unconscious and more dead than alive.

They took him to hospital and kept him there a few days and afterwards they brought him home where he had to stay in bed, resting and taking medicines during a few weeks.

Ilona had extra help for the household because she couldnt manage all this by herself.

Fortunately these days were over now and her husband was fine.
Now he was worried about her. Lately she used to have nightmares. She was shouting in her sleep, saying things without any sense about smelling a fire and talking about children. He really was worried.

He was thinking of sending her to a psychologist. After the triplets birth, she was told not to have any more children and he thought that it could be the reason of her nightmares.
He thought it was ridiculous that Mattie hadn
t been home since half a year. That could as well be the reason for Ilonas nightmares.

So Chester called Cynthia and asked her to convince Mateo to come home again. He hadnt even been there when Chessie and Marvin had their birthday. They went to school as well. The triplets had their first birthday without even knowing their oldest brother!
It was quite a difficult task for Cynthia to tell the boy that tomorrow, after school, he had to go to his own family. She said that he always could come with her during the weekends but his real place was with his family.

Mateo swallowed that bitter pill like a man. It was more difficult when they came out of school and he knew that he couldnt go home with his friend. He even cried some tears. It was difficult for Raph as well.

In the school bus, the boy sat next to his brother Marvin, whom he hardly knew because he had never seen him after his birthday.

To be continued….
