Fear not…, it’s only the wind – part 1

“The oldest and strongest emotion of mankind is fear.”
— H.P. Lovecraft

01

By mid-afternoon Sam arrived. Having driven more than 8 hours he was becoming spent. He knew better then to drive straight through but the sooner he got there the sooner he could return home to his loving wife.

So this is Twinbrook. He thought out loud. Wondering to himself, where was everyone?
He wasn’t quite sure where he was to meet up with Carl.

02

Traveling on into town. Oh thank god there’s another car. It was such a relief when Sam finally saw another car. Another living being. What in the world could be happening here. Twinbrook appeared to be like any normal small town. The streets were clean and well kept. The buildings were in good condition. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary here.

The woman’s voice on his GPS broke the silence and reminded him *turn left in 1.3 miles*

03

It was a good thing Sam had the little lady in a box otherwise he would’ve never found the place.

*Arriving at destination on right in 10 feet*

04

Looking through his side window. The house came into view.

05

This must be the place. The lady that talks to him is never wrong.

06

Picking up the newspaper by the front door. Carl must have had that set up.
He noticed the cracked paint and dirty brick. Ideas and thoughts on what he would do to fix this place up if it were his already running in his mind. First thing he thought would do would be to build a porch. Nothing but mud and dirt were here at the entrance.

07

Sam has been everywhere, he is the adventurous type. Loves to travel that hasn’t been much is his life that could scare him. However this house was a bit creepy even to him.

It doesn’t look like anyone has lived here in ages. Old worn out pictures fallen off the walls scattered about. The couch didn’t look to awfully torn up.

Putting the paper down…time to call his wife Rainy, he missed her greatly, her warm soft skin touching his, nothing between them, her moist breath on his neck, her red wet lips….. thought Sam as he roamed into the kitchen.

08

Oh yes the things he would do if this were his house.

*and you thought it was going to say something different didn’t you*

09

“Hey sweetie…yes…I’m fine…made it safe and sound…I know baby..I hope not either….I’ll be home before you know it…I promise I’ll call as often as I can…Let Tim know if you need anything honey…but if you need me I’ll be home in a flash…I love you too baby…talk to you soon….”

10

Evening was coming and it was getting dark out. The sounds of the night really added to the creepy feel of this old house.

Three old pictures hung on the wall, now Sam rarely got spooked but that was about to change. He looked at the picture for awhile of course he didn’t know who they were. Maybe they built this place. He thought maybe he would do some research on the house while he was in town.

11

He found the bedroom and placed his duffel bag on the floor. Yes getting darker by the minute. Well wouldn’t you know it ..no electricity…but he found a candle by the bed…

12

Lighting the candle, ….hummm maybe I would start fixing up the bedroom first….he thought. More pictures have fallen off the wall, some were hanging haphazardly.

A small tapping noise from the other side of the bed attracted his attention…he saw something out of the corner of his eye.

13

What was that…..Sam turned to look, the noise had stopped and he saw nothing…brushing it aside..he needed to use the restroom and see if Carl stocked the kitchen he was famished..

14

Glancing at another old picture…

15

Wait a minute…what was that….wondering if he really saw what he thought he did he went back…

16

Hummm….I could have sworn…oh well must be the light of the candle….

17

Heading back downstairs….Sam being the.. PI he never missed anything..until now…

18

The cupboards were stocked. Nothing in the fridge..no power…
“Maybe the breaker blew…” Sam said to no one there.

19

An eerie glow flowed up the stairs to greet Sam. The old wooden stairs creaked with the weight of Sam’s steps as he went down into the basement.

20

Dark, damp and musty, the smell of earth filled his nostrils.

21

Lighting the candle. This must have happened a lot, candles were everywhere.

22

He found the breaker box and flipped the switch.

23

And then there was light.
Sam let out a sigh of relief.

24

Sam in just the short time so far that he spent in the house he felt tired. He was hungry and now that the power has been restored he would grab a bite and then retire for the night…but yet again there was something he missed.

25

Thoughts of tomorrow came to mind. He would try to phone Carl and visit the local police department and the local library.

After his meal of a bowl of soup..time for bed.

His thoughts of a warm bath quickly faded after he saw the bathroom. Among his list of things to do tomorrow he would stop by the general store.

27

Taking a moment to read he was lost is his world of Mickey Spillane.

28

Off to sleep he went. He was not a heavy sleeper but unknown to Sam his normal behavior was changing. Something unknown crept up next to his bed. The sounds of something dragging, crawling on the floor beside his bed. The air became thick and foul, low raspy sounds of something unseen touching the bed.

29

If one ever feels like they slept with a thousand bricks laying on their chest. That’s what Sam felt like. He slept or so he thought he did. I didn’t remember waking up. His head ached but regardless he had work to do. He couldn’t quite figure out why he felt bad.

30

After a quick wash down and shave off to the Police department.
Office Daniel greeted him.
“Yes, Sam…Tim told me you would be stopping by. Unfortunately I have no new news for you. There have been three reported missings. Mr and Mrs Paisley and Jamie Lynn, unrelated of course.” Their last whereabouts are not really known for sure. It is said that the Paisleys were at home at the time. Their son William reported them missing. A search was done in the house all that was found was a hole inside their house. Jamie was also home at the time, a search was done at her home also, the really odd thing.. is that there was a hole in her home also.”

Sam collected the address of the two homes. His investigation would start there. Next stop the Library.

31

He needed to use the comp to do some research and send some emails , one to Tim and the other to Rainy, she was never far from his thoughts. When he thought about her certain areas began to tingle and twitch. Shaking his head…back to the present moment..the Library…

32

The computer was in use. Damn…he would have to wait….making loud noises, things like clearing his throat and such..Sam wanted the guy to know he was standing there…

33

Loudly he sat down with his newspaper..

34

The guy called Sam over…”Hey I could tell you wanted the comp, I was through anyway..anyone that makes that kind of noise in a Library demands attention..rather it be you then me..names Jake…Jake Jarvis from Sparklewood”

35

“Hey man thanks..names Sam…Sam PI..Nice to meet you..I’m from Sunset…if you want to wait around I’ll only be a second.”

“Sure…”

Since Jake was kind enough to let Sam use the comp, he would forgo the research. Maybe he should just go buy a computer but then he wasn’t so sure that internet connection was good enough at the place he was staying.

36

Sam could hear Jake grumbling about something. Jake wasn’t all that quiet either.

37

It didn’t take Sam very long to do what he needed to do.
“Hey..Jake I don’t mean to pry..but what’s with the phone thing?”

“I was suppose to meet someone here and they have not shown up yet. I can’t seem to be able to reach them..and then there are too many people coming in here now…”

Sam sensing an opportunity *someone missing perhaps* maybe he could help out Jake.

“Jake I have to run home…  well it’s not my home but the place I’m staying. How about dinner at the local hangout later tonight..maybe I can help find the person you’re waiting for.”

“Yeah, sure Sam… around 8 ok with you?” “Sure, see you later.”

38

Sam headed home.

Jake stayed a few more moments in the Library but not for long..he just didn’t like a crowed place..it spooked him.

39

Sam, relaxing watching TV. Thinking about the report the police gave him……in the background there is this thumping sound..bump…bump…bump…at first he thought it was coming from the TV..bump…bump…bump he then realized it was in the basement.

40

Down the dark stairs he went…

41

What in the hell…….a baseball…..it must have rolled down the stairs…but how….

42

The smell of earth was so strong and fresh Sam tracked the smell behind the stairs…

43

WHAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be continued…

Fear not…. it’s only the wind – Intro

00

Man has been studying why we are afraid of the dark for ages. It would seem that is not the dark that we are truly afraid but what is in it or should I say what we think lies inside the darkness, around the corner or just on the other side of the door. Things that go bump in the night, sounds that have no explanation. Movements in the corner of your eye. The shadow that dashes past. Is it only the wind? one might want to ask.

01

Sam lives in Sunset. The sun shines bright most days. He has a normal life.. for the most part. His days are filled with missing dogs and cats. For some reason Sunset’s pets disappeared long ago. Some even say a craft from outer space took them all. Maybe by some miracle they will return. He is a PI, but in the peaceful town of Sunset not much out of the ordinary happens.

Sam has a routine. By the clock, everyday. He grabs the evening paper on his way in from work.

02

He looks over the news. There are sections that cover all the neighboring cities. Riverview, Barnacle Bay. Nothing much to report there. However Twinbrook caught his eye. “Disappearance of Townsfolk” he read over the article with much curiosity. He read on. “Several of the townsfolk have gone missing over night it seems, there have been reports of strange unexplainable noises and screams in the night. It seems to be more prevalent during the foggy mist that roll in at night. No evidence what so ever has been found. Nothing..it’s as if they fell off the face of the earth.”

03

Sam continued to read. They were seeking aid for someone to come help them find answers and to find the missing townsfolk.
This… to Sam was right up his alley. His heart beat sped up as did his pulse. The excitement was coming to the surface.

“Honey, dinner is ready.” His wife’s voice broke though his thoughts.

04

Rainy, his wife, so caring she is, so loving. He loved her more than anything, more than life itself.
At the dinner table they would normally chat about their day. What he worked on today, the clients he helped and they would talk about what she did today.
But tonight Sam was distracted. He found it hard to listen.

05

Rainy cleaned up the dishes just as Sam’s phone rang. The ring almost made him jump. He was on edge with the prospect of a case that, to him sounds like the greatest mission he had ever had the opportunity to work on. He was hoping it was his department calling.

06

“Who was that?” Rainy ask, her voice like melted butter. Sam found himself stuttering over his words. Making a jumbled mess out of them.
“It’s…well, its…wo..wo..ummm..that..was..a..umm you know that was Tim.”

“Sam, what’s wrong with you? Is there something wrong?” Rainy knows her husband very well and she knew that by the way he was talking a job had come up.”
“Baby, hey sweetie I have to run to the office for a few minutes. I won’t be long I promise.”

07

Tim wasn’t going to be here Sam knew that. He had left the file and all the information on the desk for Sam. Which wasn’t much. No one really knew much about what was happening in Twinbrook but Sam was going to find out. He leaves tomorrow morning.

08

He plugged in a few details on his comp, sent a few emails to his colleagues letting them know he would be out of town. Sent a small note to Tim to look after Rainy while he was gone. He wasn’t sure just how long he would be away. He didn’t really want to be apart from his wife, that’s the part of his job he hated the most. The separation.

The file was on the desk just as Tim said it would be, along with an address to a small place in Twinbrook and the name and cell number of his contact who went by the name of Carl, no last name just Carl.

09

The file he no longer needed. Sam printed all the information he needed on a sheet of paper and placed it in his wallet.

Now it was time to go home and face his wife.

10

Rainy knew that he was going on a trip. She knew it during dinner. She didn’t mind too much. It was a part of his job. She accepted that the day they said their wedding vows.

Arriving home, Sam smelt the warm fragrance of flowers in the air…mmmmmmm he knew what that meant.

His excitement flared a trembling inside him. He didn’t even bother taking off his hat.

11

Her skin soft as the silk of butterfly wings. Oh he loved her, every bit of her. What was he to do without her. His breath caught in his throat the moment her lips met his.

12

The passion they shared will have to last them for who knows how long. Sam could only hope that he could find the answers quickly.

13

In the early hours Sam quietly dressed, kissed his wife goodbye without waking her, grabbed his duffel bag and slipped out the front door.

14

Alone on the road, in the cool morning air. Sam drove as the unknown opened to greet him….
